Candidates - Tips & Hints

You've Got an Interview

Be prepared. Do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the organisation you are being interviewed by. If they have a website you should browse this, or contact their HR department and ask if there is a brochure pack available.

Have a dress rehearsal. Draw up a list of questions you might be asked and then have a friend ask you them and practice your answers. This will help you to be more confident during the real interview.

Know where you're going. Check out what bus or train you need to get and how long it will take. If you're unsure of where the organisation is located, find out the day before by doing a practice run. On the day, allow extra time for delays, or finding a parking space if you are driving there.

Look smart. From your research you should have a good idea of the culture of the organisation you are visiting and be able to dress appropriately. A suit always looks smart, but make sure you iron the shirt underneath and don't forget to polish your shoes! Attention to detail can be the deciding factor between you and another candidate.

On the day. Make sure you know the name of the interviewer. Turn up on time. Greet the interviewer with a smile and a firm handshake, a good first impression is vital, and a limp, wet-fish handshake is not going to make one. Try and relax during the interview and take time to think about your answers to the questions. Make sure you have some examples of things you have done well in your current role that benefited the company. Be honest about your weaknesses. Have some questions for the interviewer at the end. This will show that you are interested in the organisation and are keen enough on the role to have done some research.

Be polite, be friendly and be yourself.
